The winter can be a dangerous time to be out walking. Slipping on the snow and ice can lead to a big fall and injuries.

CBS 2’s Tanya Rivero offers these tips to staying safe on the ice, and what to do should you happen to fall.

STAYING SAFE ON THE ICE

Wear proper shoes
Walk slowly
Take small steps
Keep both hands free

IF YOU BEGIN TO FALL:

Relax
Drop what you’re carrying
Break fall with thigh, hip, and shoulder
Bend head forward
